Here you will find explanations of terms used on our website and also within the opal industry.

Reference Number:
This is our stock number we use to identify each item.

Body Tone:
This is the base colour of the stone according to Opal Industry Standards.
You can read more here.

Dominant Colour:
This is the colour that features predominantly on the stone.
There may be other colours but this is the main one.

Clarity:
The transparency of the stone, with there being three types; opaque, translucent and transparent.

Type:
Describes the group of opal it is, either light, dark, black or crystal.

Pattern:
The colour quite often resembles certain patterns, it might be pinfire or moss or the elusive harlequin.
This is essentially just a name given to describe the patterns that form, although each stone is unique and can contain various pattern styles.

Carat Weight:
Carat is a weight measurement which is used for gemstones.
Not to be confused with Karat weight, which is the measurement for gold.

Brightness:
The colour is rated on a brilliance scale from faint (1) to brilliant (5) and lets you know just how bright you can expect the colour to appear.

Composite Material:
Usually black backing used as a base for a thin layer of opal to be adhered to, improving its appearance. This is not a solid opal.

Boulder Opal:
This is opal that has naturally adhered to a host rock and usually runs through as a thin vein of colour.

Solid Opal:
This is 100% opal with no other composite materials.
