Here you will find explanations of terms used on our website and also within the opal industry.
Reference Number: This is our stock number we use to identify each item.
Body Tone: This is the base colour of the stone according to Opal Industry Standards. You can read more here.
Dominant Colour: This is the colour that features predominantly on the stone. There may be other colours but this is the main one.
Clarity: The transparency of the stone, with there being three types; opaque, translucent and transparent.
Type: Describes the group of opal it is, either light, dark, black or crystal.
Pattern: The colour quite often resembles certain patterns, it might be pinfire or moss or the elusive harlequin. This is essentially just a name given to describe the patterns that form, although each stone is unique and can contain various pattern styles.
Carat Weight: Carat is a weight measurement which is used for gemstones. Not to be confused with Karat weight, which is the measurement for gold.
Brightness: The colour is rated on a brilliance scale from faint (1) to brilliant (5) and lets you know just how bright you can expect the colour to appear.
Composite Material: Usually black backing used as a base for a thin layer of opal to be adhered to, improving its appearance. This is not a solid opal.
Boulder Opal: This is opal that has naturally adhered to a host rock and usually runs through as a thin vein of colour.
Solid Opal: This is 100% opal with no other composite materials.
